Description
The Adélie penguin is a species of
penguin that usually found along the entire Antarctic coast. These
penguins are mid-sized, being 46 to 71 cm (18 to 28 in) in height and
3.6 to 6 kg (7.9 to 13.2 lb) in weight. Distinctive marks are
the white ring surrounding the eye and the feathers at the base of the bill.
These long feathers hide most of the red bill. The tail is a little longer than
other penguins' tails. The appearance looks somewhat like a tuxedo. They
are a little smaller than other penguin species. Their appearance is closest to
the stereotypical image of penguins as mostly black with a white belly.
Adélie
penguins usually swim at around 5 miles per hour (8.0 km/h).
Adélie
penguins are preyed on by leopard seals, skuas, and
occasionally, killer whales.
Diet
Adélie
penguin eats Antartic krill, squid, and fish. They can dive up to 575 feet (175
m) for feeding.Their beaks are a bit chubby, but the edges are rough, one of
the uses is to catch a slick fish. Their bodies are specially designed for
hunting. Scientists believe that penguins adélie eat less in winter than other
seasons. Its prey is sea lions, skua, and sometimes, killer whales.
Reproduction
Adelie
penguin breeds in October or November, at the end of winter and early spring.
In December, the hottest month in Antarctica (about -2 ° C), the parents take
turns incubating the eggs, one goes to feed and the other remains another to
warm the egg. The parents who do not eat. In March, the adults and their young
back to the sea. Penguin Adelie lives in sea ice but needs ice-free ground to
breed. With the decline of sea ice and food scarcity, Adelie penguin population
has fallen 65% over the past 25 years.
Migration
Adélie penguins living in the Ross Sea region in
Antarctica migrate an average of about 13,000 kilometres (8,100 mi) during
the year as they follow the sun from their breeding colonies to winter foraging
grounds and back again. Their longest journey has been recorded up to
17,600 kilometers. Adeese penguins often get lost too, this is because they
make the sun as a guide. So when night comes, sometimes this type of penguin
get lost.

Fun Facts
1. Adélies build their nests with stones are known to steal stones
from the nests of rival breeding pairs.
2. Members of this genus have short, wedge-shaped tails, with
14-18 stiff tail feathers. They are known to rock back on their heel and prop
themselves up on land utilizing their tail feathers.
3. Studies with Adélies indicate that they use the sun to navigate
from land to sea. The adjust for the sun's changing position in the sky
throughout the day.
4. A colony of 5 million Adélies may eat nearly 8 million kg (17.6
million lb.) of krill and small fishes daily.
5. Research has demonstrated that Adélie Penguins are very
faithful to their nest sites. In one study, male Adélies were faithful to the
previous year's territory 99% of the time.
